Apple-sized Hail balls falling from the sky in Bulgaria | News

A strong hailstorm caused unprecedented sightings in parts of Bulgaria on Saturday. Social media is filled with pictures of hail balls, sometimes the size of an apple. Some streets were completely covered in a 15-20 cm thick layer of white hail balls.

Zlatograd, among others, was hit by a hailstorm. This city is located in the south of the country at the foot of the Rhodope Mountains and not far from the Greek border. Photos posted on social media show, among other things, how a street in Zlatograd is covered with a layer of ice balls 15-20 centimeters long.

“The whole city was covered in a cold cloud,” Daniela Taseva from Zlatograd told Bulgarian National Radio (BNR). “The sky first turned gray, then black. At first it started to rain, then for 15 minutes ice balls fell from the sky. I was afraid that the windows would shatter.”

According to “Burgas 24” newspaper, thunderstorms were expected and the cold would come suddenly, while temperatures ranged between 28 and 33 degrees on Saturday. According to the newspaper “Dence”, the storm also hit Velingrad, Nedelino and Madan, causing severe damage to agriculture in the region.
