Audrey Diwan’s “L’événement” won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday. The award was won by the jury of the 78th Mostra session, led by South Korean director Bong Joon-ho.

“L’événement” is about Anne, a carefree student in France in the early 1960s, where abortion is still punishable by imprisonment. Ann finds out she is pregnant, but she wants to continue her studies in order to preserve the prospect of a future outside her home village.

The film is based on the book of the same name by Annie Erno.

Last year, American director Chloe Chow won the Golden Lion for “Nomadland”.

Here are the main winners of the 78th Venice Film Festival:

Golden Lion for Best Picture: L’événement by Audrey Diwan (France)

Grand Jury Prize: “stata la mano di Dio” (The Hand of God), directed by Paolo Sorrentino (Italy)

Silver Lion for Best Director: New Zealand’s Jane Campion, “The Power of The Dog.”

Best Screenplay Award: Maggie Gyllenhaal, American, for The Lost Daughter.

Best Actress Award: Spanish Penelope Cruz for her role in Pedro Almodovar’s Madres Paralelas.

Best Actor Award: Filipino John Arquilla for his role in Eric Mattei, On the Job: The Missing 8.
