Actress Ruth Jassmann, who became famous in the 1960s as the lead actress in the German educational films Helga, has passed away. She died in Munich on Friday at the age of 85 after a long struggle with a serious illness. Her son reported this to the German news agency (DPA).

Ruth Jasman was born in Augsburg, first studied sports and chemistry, then pursued a career as a model and ended up in the cinema. In the United States, she played in about ten episodes of the Western TV series “Smoking Coults”. Suddenly she became world famous in the Federal Republic and beyond in 1967, with the educational film “Helga – About the Evolution of Human Life”. The film was shot with the support of the German Ministry of Health and attracted millions of viewers. The news magazine Der Spiegel wrote in 1968: “Helga is the most successful German film of all time and is at the same time a coup.”

After the two “Helga” series, Oswalt Kolle took over the position of Media Officer for the state. Ruth Gassman disappeared behind the scenes and worked as an assistant director, including to the opera Saarbrucken. There she also performed her role as a singer.

Ruth Gassman leaves three children. She lived in Asheheim, near Munich. Funeral ceremonies are held in close-knit family circles.
