Donald Trump has lost a lawsuit brought against him by British singer Eddy Grant. The case concerns the use of Grant’s song “Electric Avenue” in a 2020 presidential campaign commercial. According to the BBC, a federal judge in Manhattan ruled that Trump must pay the 76-year-old singer for 40 seconds of the song. It was in a commercial and can be heard.

The lawsuit lasted a total of four years. The clip had a total of 13.7 million views on Twitter, as it was then called X, before Trump’s team removed the clip from social media.

A federal judge has ruled that Trump violated Eddie Grant’s copyright by using the song without permission. The judge agreed with Grant’s lawyers, who said it was important to let artists decide what happens to their music. “Politicians are not above the law in these cases,” Grant’s legal team said.

This isn’t Trump’s first defeat in a lawsuit over the use of music. Earlier this month, a US judge ruled that Trump, who is running for president again, can no longer use Isaac Hayes’s “Hold On I’m Coming” at his campaign rallies. Dozens of other artists have previously argued that Trump shouldn’t use their music in his campaign, including ABBA, Celine Dion and Beyoncé.
