US President Joe Biden also attended King Philip this morning in Brussels between the NATO and European Union summits. It is the second royal visit he is making on his first trip abroad as president, having already had tea with Britain’s Queen Elizabeth on Sunday with his wife Jill. Watch above how the monster arrived at the palace and how King Philip, President Biden, and Prime Minister De Crooze stood together for the press.
The US embassy where the president resides is located 100 meters from the palace. However, President Biden arrived in style with a long line of wagons. Biden’s Cadillac, aka “The Beast,” couldn’t do the trick as leaders of other countries do. The car is actually too wide to drive smoothly through the palace gates… Because of this Biden can’t drive to the Court of Honor like other heads of state, but he still has to walk a bit.
No first lady or queen
Jill Biden is not with the King of Belgium on Tuesday, because the first lady has already returned home. But Biden is accompanied by his Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken. Belgian Prime Minister Alexandre de Croo and his Foreign Minister Sophie Villemis will also attend. The visit is scheduled from 11 am to 12 noon.
Joe Biden and King Philip have met before. It was 2011 when Philip was still the crown prince and Biden was vice president under Barack Obama. Then Prince Philip and his wife Mathilde visited the White House as part of a major Belgian trade mission to the United States. The story goes that Philip preferred to meet Obama, but protocol did not allow this because Philip was not yet a head of state or government.
After Philip became king in 2013, Queen Mathilde met Obama, including when he was in Brussels in 2014. The royal couple also welcomed Donald Trump and his wife Melania at the palace in 2017.
