Dutch curlers will miss the Beijing Olympics early next year. The firstborns also lost their penultimate match in the Olympic qualifying tournament in Leeuwarden, against favorites Norway: 5-8. So the Norwegians qualified undefeated for the Winter Games.
The Orange team closed the World Cup football Thursday night with a (8-3) win over South Korea, which was also eliminated. The Orange team also beat Germany (6-5 after overtime) and the Czech Republic (7-4) in the tournament held in Elfstedenhal. The other five matches were lost. The Netherlands ranked seventh.
Norway has won all eight matches at Leeuwarden, so it will be in Beijing in February. Numbers 2, 3 and 4 from OKT (Italy, Czech Republic and Denmark) will compete in qualifying for the last two tickets on Friday and Saturday.
After last month’s disappointing European Championship in Lillehammer, where Orange were relegated from the top flight, national coach Shari Lebrandt’s side had hoped he could surprise his country. However, with Wouter Gösgens skipped, OKT was a disappointment for the reels.
