Russia’s space agency Roscosmos announced Thursday that it plans to send its only active astronaut, Anna Kikina, to the International Space Station (ISS) in August or September.
Anna Kikina, a 37-year-old engineer, will be the fifth professional Russian cosmonaut to be sent into space, while the United States and Europe have sent dozens of women to the International Space Station.
Last year, Roscosmos said the Kkina would fly a SpaceX Crew Dragon aboard Elon Musk if a partnership was signed between Moscow and NASA. The Russian space agency said Thursday that if the deal is sealed, Kekina will depart in August. If the agreement is not reached, Anna Kekina will launch a Russian missile in September.
Elena Serova, the last Russian cosmonaut sent into space by Moscow, spent 167 days on the International Space Station from September 2014 to March 2015.
