SpaceX launches its paid moon mission in the cryptocurrency Dogecoin | Science

The Calgary-based company said in a statement that the satellite, dubbed DOGE-1, will be launched on board the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in the first quarter of 2022. The satellite, which weighs forty kilograms, will collect information about the moon through sensors and cameras, according to The company. The company talks about the first commercial fees on the moon to be paid in full with Dogecoin, without specifying the exact cost of the project.

“We are excited to launch DOGE-1 to the Moon!” Said Tom Oceanero of SpaceX. “This mission will clarify the application of cryptocurrency beyond Earth’s orbit and lay the foundation for interplanetary trade.”

The announcement comes a day after SpaceX founder Elon Musk hosted the live comedy show “Saturday Night Live” (SNL). In it, he praised Dogecoin, which was originally presented as a joke but was legitimized by the tweets of the eccentric tech entrepreneur. The boss of Tesla, a major cryptocurrency engine, described Dogecoin in the SNL chart as “an unstoppable vehicle that will take over the world.”
Musk shared the announcement of the moon mission Sunday on Twitter, writing: “To the mooooonnn !!”
