This is about the region of India that disappeared 36 years ago. This equates to approximately 87,000 square kilometers of ice lost each year, or nearly three times the surface of our country.
Lanzhou University conducted its research on the basis of satellite observations. It is the first study to summarize the change in the total surface ice on our planet. Reports of sea ice and ice melt appear frequently, but they typically focus on ice volume reduction—which is important for research on sea level rise—and do not provide a comprehensive overview.
The search was published in June American geophysicist Do. In addition to ice sheets, glaciers, and sea ice, climatologists have also studied snow cover and frozen soil in cold regions, known as permafrost. All these frozen parts of the Earth together they call the “Cryosphere”.
The total surface of the ice on our planet has an important function. It also determines how much sunlight is reflected back into the room. Simply put: the less ice there is on Earth, the darker the surface of our planet and the more sunlight is absorbed and converted into heat.
Climate experts warn that this effect, along with rising concentrations of greenhouse gases, could lead to global warming.
