The 39th National Games for Athletes with Intellectual Disabilities will be held in 2023 during the boarding weekend at Neckerhall in Mechelen. At least 3,400 athletes are expected.

The decision has been made. Special Olympics Belgium (SOB), an organization for athletes with intellectual disabilities, will organize the 39th edition of the National Games in Degel.

Special Olympics is an international movement that offers Olympic sports to people with intellectual disabilities year-round. Through sport, Special Olympics wants to improve their self-confidence, health and potential in everyday life.

The movement wants to break the taboos that still exist around people with intellectual disabilities, in order to create respect and appreciation for them.

The official announcement will take place next Friday in Mechelen with the presence of ambassadors, including Gunther Neves, Pete den Boer and Patrick Rigwell. In the coming months and years, these iconic Malinois will highlight the games in the lead up to May 2023. The ambassadors will then take part in a united football moment in which people with and without intellectual disabilities play the sport together on one team. (ldn)
