The most powerful HP workstations will now receive WSL 2 as standard, along with a ready-to-use data science software package that significantly reduces configuration time.
HP will install Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 (WSL 2) by default on a number of workstations, both desktop and mobile devices. The first devices are ZBook Fury G8, ZBook Studio G8, Z2 G8 SFF, Z2 G8 Tower, Z4, Z6 en Z8. Minimum requirement is 32 GB of RAM for smooth operation with WSL 2, Nvidia Quadro RTX 3000 or RTX A3000.
Introducing WSL 2 as a standard on computers is helpful, but as a user you can also do it yourself today. What HP wants to make a difference with is a specific data science suite of Linux software. With this, every device comes with pre-installed tools such as GIT, Visual Studio Code, and software suites such as TensorFlow and PyTorch.
HP has also partnered with Nvidia to support tools like CUDA out of the box within the software stack and WSL 2.
By pre-installing the software suite, developers can get devices up and running faster. Experienced users earn a few hours, beginners a few days. If you did not buy such a pre-configured device, you will have to install WSL 2 yourself as well as various tools. Or you already have a lot of experience and use an installation script, then everything works after one click.
