At least two people were killed today when peacekeepers from the United Nations Mission in the Congo (MONUSCO) opened fire in Kasindi, at a border point with Uganda. The United Nations mission itself confirmed this. However, the exact circumstances are not yet clear.
The Blue Helmets, the international peacekeepers, could have been obstructed when they wanted to cross the border. So they opened fire. Initially, eight people were seriously injured. At least two of these eight victims were officers. Now, however, there is talk of at least two deaths.
MONUSCO chief Bento Keita said she was “deeply shocked by this serious incident” and called the militants’ behavior “irresponsible”. She added that the attackers were arrested pending investigation. The nationality of the blue helmets involved has not yet been revealed.
Last week, the area witnessed demonstrations demanding the departure of the blue helmets. According to the protesters, the peacekeepers are unable to fight the armed groups in the area. The demonstrations were very turbulent, with at least 19 people killed.
