VRT will show the Olympics on screen until at least 2032. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced that it will grant the European Broadcasting Union, the European Public Broadcasting Association and their members the rights to participate in the Olympic Games for a period of 6 years.
Together with other public broadcasters in Europe, VRT and Sporza acquire TV, radio and Internet broadcasting rights. Specifically, this relates to the 2026 (Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo) and 2030 (not yet designated) Olympic Winter Games and the 2028 (Los Angeles) and 2032 (Brisbane) Olympic Winter Games.
The agreement guarantees viewers, listeners and surfers via Sporza more than 200 hours of freely accessible reporting on the Olympic Games and a minimum of 100 hours on the Winter Olympics.
The primary mission of the VRT
“Part of VRT’s core mission is the Olympics,” says Peter de Wendt, Editor-in-Chief of Sporza. “It is the perfect moment in which popular and smaller sports reach, inspire and entertain viewers, listeners and users.” Small or new sports also find their way to a large audience through the Olympic Games. The fact that Sporza and VRT are certain of these rights until 2032 is evident.
