With pressure-controlled mammography, the breast remains flat, although the type of breast is considered. “This looked promising, but recent studies have shown that pain perception is no different from current mammography,” Broeders says. “We take women’s comfort into account, but the most important thing is that we can detect breast cancer early, treat women quickly and reduce deaths from breast cancer,” Broders explains. “I have a lot of sympathy for people who are wondering if things could be done differently, but the truth is we only have evidence from mammograms that it reduces mortality.”
