Schaijk | Phoenix Film Café is screening a film at Dorpshuis De Phoenix in Schaijk on Tuesday 30 January, about the way the weakest in society are crushed by government bureaucracy. The film won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
Daniel Blake, 59, makes his living as a carpenter. Until he has a heart attack and has to turn to the state for the first time in his life. He’s trying to navigate the impersonal and bureaucratic benefits system. It’s certainly not easy for him. Humor, warmth and desperation go hand in hand to make I, Daniel Blake a vibrant, moving and powerful film. The film is set in the UK and was released in 2016. Unfortunately, the issue is still ongoing, and not just in England. Of course, the reality is somewhat simplified and exaggerated here and there, but that only makes the message clearer and more compelling.
Ken Loach
The socially renowned director Ken Loach made this film in 2016 at the age of 80. Retirement age, but Loach feels he can’t stop experiencing so much social injustice. He has since made two more films, the latest being The Old Oak, which was released in 2023. In addition to the Palme d’Or, “I, Daniel Blake” has won several other awards at foreign and Dutch film festivals (including the Nordic Film Festival and Film by the Sea). The film will be screened on Tuesday, January 30th at the village hall De Phoenix in Schaijk. The film starts at 8:00 p.m., you can enter from 7:15 p.m. Tickets cost 5 euros.
