Should you also wear sunscreen in your car?

With these summer temperatures, it’s a good idea to wear sunscreen. He should. But should you really do this before getting into the car?

It took a while, but it looks like summer has already arrived in the Netherlands. Next week it could become locally tropical warm. Tomorrow the temperature could reach around 32 degrees locally in the southeast of the country.

This is why you should wear sunscreen in your car

According to the Dutch Cancer Society, it is also certainly wise to apply sunscreen when you are in a car or behind other glass.

That’s the thing. There are two types of UV rays: UVA and UVB. UVB rays can damage your skin immediately. This radiation causes your skin to turn red and burn. This increases your risk of skin cancer. It also has positive effects, because it produces vitamin D. This type of radiation generally does not pass through glass. This also prevents you from getting a tan when you’re in a car.

Ultraviolet (UVA) rays pass through glass. The amount depends on the type of glass. This type of radiation does not directly burn you, but it does cause damage because it penetrates deep into the skin. It ages your skin faster and can even cause skin cancer. So rub it in!

Does sunscreen protect against both UVA and UVB rays?

What about sunburn? Does it protect against both rays? Usually yes, but not always. You can see this from the logos on the bottle. Protection against UVA rays is indicated by the SPF logo. If the sunscreen also protects against UVA rays, this logo will be included. This is usually a circle with the letters UVA. A sunscreen that protects against both is called “broad spectrum.”
