In the last three years the energy transition in Italy has achieved a ‘return’. That’s the conclusion of the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) annual report on energy transition. According to researchers, the reason is Italy’s reliance on gas.

Along with four other countries, the WEF highlights Italy as one of the countries that have shown a ‘turn’ in the energy transition in recent years. WEF is doing this research in the United Kingdom, Turkey, Angola and Kuwait. The reasons for this vary, the report shows. For example, researchers praise the UK for being a ‘leader’ in the energy transition sector and that it continues to ‘perform very well’ in that area.

But in recent years it has ‘slowed down’ due to increased dependence on gas, energy crisis and rising energy costs. The WEF points out that Turkey’s willingness to undertake energy transition initiatives is waning. According to the WEF, it is a matter of rules and no investments.

Internationally, the WEF concludes that the energy transition is still underway, but ‘has lost momentum due to increasing global uncertainties’. According to the report, progress is hampered by setbacks such as rising energy prices, while energy security is also constantly challenged by geopolitical risks.
