Prime Minister Theresa May is under intense criticism in Parliament and in her party over the Brexit deal reached under her responsibility. Political correspondent Fons Lampe explains how the EU views developments in the UK.
Vons, what do they think about this matter in The Hague and Brussels?
“Behind the scenes, you are hearing big concerns in The Hague and Brussels about the chaos in the UK. Because the chaos in London means the chance of a no-deal Brexit in March will be greater. This means more uncertainty for our businesses and our fellow citizens.
At the same time, European Union countries continue to prepare for no agreement. In the Netherlands, for example, more customs officers and additional food inspectors are being recruited.
Is a new deal possible?
“If Prime Minister Theresa May leaves, the current deal will not be on the table. But to say that someone new could completely change it…”
“The EU will not really move on core issues such as citizens’ rights, finances and the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland. Maybe some dots and breaks, but other than that not much is possible, say insiders. European countries continue their preparations efforts, such as the EU summit and a number of Consultations in Brussels, meanwhile, we have to wait and see what happens in London and who will take charge there next week.

“One insider outlined the following scenario: The divisions in the UK are so great, and the antipathy towards the EU so intense, that in order to reach an agreement and unite the country and parliament, a lot of chaos and panic must first arise.”
