The Gibraltar issue, which threatened to derail Sunday’s EU summit, was resolved at the last minute. The divorce agreement between the UK and the European Union has made no decision on the small British rock in southern Spain.
The Spaniards are demanding a say in how things are arranged there after the British leave the European Union. Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez even threatened to use his veto, but that is no longer necessary now that the British government on Saturday afternoon ensured Gibraltar would not be included in the Brexit deal. This was reported by Reuters news agency after reviewing the draft agreement.
An old quarrel
Spain and the United Kingdom have been arguing for centuries over the small peninsula on Spain’s southern coast that was once occupied by the British. Spain wants to get Monkey Rock back, but the British aren’t worried about that. Gibraltar residents voted overwhelmingly against Brexit.

The EU summit can continue
With Britain’s guarantee, it seems that the last obstacle on the way to tomorrow’s European Union summit has been crossed. EU leaders will meet on Sunday to discuss the divorce agreement and a political declaration on how the EU and the UK will deal with each other in the future.
