Bridging the gap: health care in a highly diverse society (immigration and health symposium)

background

He – she Migration and Global Mobility Network (MIGLOBA) The Institute of Tropical Medicine continues its annual symposium series on migrant health, this year in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Antwerp. This fifth edition focuses on health care in a highly diverse society.

Belgium is a very diverse society due to the many ethnic, cultural, religious and linguistic groups that inhabit the country. In this context, the legal situation, administrative obstacles, language barriers and cultural differences are just some of the many factors that can affect the ability of patients to seek treatment and the ability of health care providers to keep everyone in care. In Flanders, networks of primary care providers and social care actors (“first-line areas”) focus on local prevention and care needs and strive to achieve integrated care, but face challenges in reaching the most vulnerable groups.

This symposium on migration and health will highlight how barriers along the entire care continuum (health promotion, access to care and retention) work in both directions, and how they can be overcome. The symposium will explore challenges from the perspective of healthcare providers and the patient, identify gaps and highlight scientific projects and local initiatives with migrants and refugees and, more generally, with diverse cultural, religious and linguistic populations to further develop an accessible and equal society. Primary care system for all.

This symposium will address these questions based on various presentations from experts in the field of research and social organisations. Please note: This seminar is held in English.
