• The HMD Barbie Phone costs £99 and allows users to call and text, but does not offer access to social media apps.
• The phone features a pink Barbie keyboard with hidden glow-in-the-dark designs.
• Despite being new, some experts believe it will sell over 400,000 copies in the UK.

HMD Global has partnered with Mattel to launch the HMD Barbie Phone, a £99 (€117.66) foldable phone. The device will be available from Wednesday and will allow users to call and text, but will not offer access to social media apps.

Design and Features

The phone features a Barbie pink keyboard that displays hidden designs in the dark such as palm trees, hearts and flamingos. The launch coincides with Barbie’s 65th birthday and follows last year’s global hit film.

Ben Wood, principal analyst at CCS Insight, believes that while some people may be tempted to buy a phone as a fun novelty, most people are so dependent on their smartphones that they can’t go without them for more than a day or two.

Background and Competition

HMD Global, backed by Alphabet’s Google and Qualcomm, has launched several feature phones, including re-releases of classic Nokia phones like the 3210 and 3310. With the latest launch, the company wants to capitalize on the growing trend of nostalgic consumerism.

according to Estimates HMD could sell over 400,000 Barbie phones in the UK, where the phone will be available via Vodafone and Argos.

Whether and when the Barbie phone will be available in Belgium is a question that many fans would like to have answered very quickly.
