Cuba officially applied for membership in the BRICS group as a “partner country” in a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who currently chairs the group. The announcement was made on X by Cuban Foreign Minister Carlos Miguel Pereira, who emphasized that BRICS has become increasingly prominent in global geopolitics and offers hope to developing countries.

Pereira’s rapprochement with Putin coincides with the upcoming BRICS summit scheduled to be held from October 22 to 24 in Kazan, Russia. Azerbaijan also recently expressed interest in joining BRICS after a meeting between Putin and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. BRICS membership is by invitation only. Earlier this year, several countries, including Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates, were invited to join. Argentina rejected the invitation despite being offered membership.
