Faster help with rent arrears is possible for nearly half a million tenants, now that 10 housing associations have signed the model covenant drawn up by Aedes and Debt Assistance Association NVVK, the National Alliance for Financial Health. Housing associations don’t just unite to help people who have debt. This is an example of the many initiatives in the Netherlands to promote the financial health of citizens.
All employers can join the National Coalition for Financial Health. Public and private organizations work together in this alliance for a financially healthy Netherlands. A financially sound society contributes to the well-being of individuals, organizations, the economy and thus society as a whole.
Research by Nybod shows that 45 percent of Dutch families find it difficult to meet their financial needs. This brings anxiety and stress. 1.4 million households have precarious or problematic debt. 574,000 families are at or are at risk of living in poverty.
Financial concerns lead to feelings of loneliness and exclusion, and to problems in the areas of living, work, health, education and upbringing. Financial health is a condition for an inclusive transition to a sustainable society.
Financial worries, debt and poverty have a negative impact on physical and mental health. Low-income people live shorter lives, experience more stress, and are more likely to suffer from insomnia and depression. This is why it is important for all employers to take this into consideration and join the National Coalition for Financial Health. This way money problems can be prevented before they arise.
