It’s official: video games can be good for your mental health –

It’s often said that video games, especially intense PvP games, bring out the worst in us. And believe me, I’ve been there.

But a new study shows that video games — in moderation — can be good for your mental health.

The latest study, conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic and published in Nature Human Behavior, tested participants of different ages who used Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 consoles during this period.

Of the participants, 39% were between the ages of 45 and 69, 21% were students, 39% were working full-time, 11% were unemployed, 35% were “dedicated” players and 20% were “core” players.

The study found that Nintendo Switch use improved psychological symptoms by 0.8 standard deviations, while PS5 use improved them by 0.2. Notably, the beneficial effects were less prevalent in younger gamers. Additionally, Nintendo Switch use appears to apply to and benefit a much broader demographic, particularly those who identify as “non-gamers.”

It’s important to acknowledge some caveats — the research being conducted during the pandemic meant participants had few other options for enrichment, and most importantly, playing for more than three hours a day reduces the psychological benefits.

So take it with a grain of salt and definitely get out, but know that if you’re feeling down, logging in to play your favorite game – in moderation – might do you some good (thanks, Medical News).
