Türkiye accelerates purchase of Eurofighter Typhoon

Key takeaways

  • The Turkish Ministry of Defense is accelerating technical preparations for the purchase of Eurofighter Typhoon fighter aircraft.
  • This push for Eurofighter aircraft comes after a lengthy process regarding the US request for F-16 fighter jets, which was eventually approved.
  • Germany may reconsider its opposition to the agreement amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Technical preparations are underway in Türkiye to accelerate the purchase of Eurofighter Typhoon combat aircraft. A Defense Ministry official confirmed this on Thursday, saying the work aims to speed up the process without any conditions.

Türkiye’s pursuit of Eurofighter fighters follows a previously lengthy process regarding the United States’ request for F-16 fighter jets. Although Turkey eventually agreed to 40 new F-16 aircraft and modernization packages for existing aircraft, the way was cleared after Ankara supported Sweden’s application for NATO membership earlier this year.

Recent developments

Last year, Ankara began discussions with Eurofighter consortium members Britain and Spain about the possible purchase of Typhoon aircraft. However, Germany subsequently opposed the deal. Türkiye then expressed its dissatisfaction with the lack of progress due to Berlin’s reluctance. Recent reports indicate that Germany is reconsidering its position due to escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Leadership commitment

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz held talks on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York last month. Their next meeting in Istanbul on Saturday is expected to include talks on purchasing the Eurofighter, further underscoring Türkiye’s commitment to securing these fighter jets.
