NHG will review guidelines for pain management during IUD insertion.

The Dutch Association of General Practitioners (NHG) will re-examine its guidelines for pain management when inserting an IUD. The review comes after the NHG indicated earlier this week that it would not amend the guideline. Reports about the matter have created “a lot of noise in recent days,” prompting the review to be planned, according to an NHG spokesperson.

“We cannot say exactly when the review will be completed and we cannot yet make any statements about what the changes will be. But pain relief from IUD placement is one of the topics that will be re-examined,” says NHG.

This spring, the IUD insertion procedure came under fire because some women reported severe pain when it was inserted. Currently, Dutch guidelines only recommend naproxen and paracetamol for pain relief. This month, the US CDC revised its guidelines to also allow certain gels or sprays for pain relief.

In April, Ava, a Dutch contraceptive and abortion advocacy organization, criticized the Dutch guidelines. In an opinion published in the Volkskrant, the organization noted that naproxen and paracetamol “have only limited effectiveness.”
