Niantic is encouraging players to get outside during World Walking Day

October 6 is World Walking Day. On this day, Niantic wants to encourage its players to get out, lead a healthy lifestyle and go on an adventure with friends. Now that summer is over, and you’re able to take many walks during this time, the cooler days are back. Walking is not only a simple and easy way to stay healthy, but it is also an activity that Niantic encourages through its games: Pokémon GO, Monster Hunter Now, and Pikmin Bloom.

According to a survey conducted by Niantic in August 2023 during Pokémon GO Fest London:

  • 65% of players say playing Pokémon GO encourages them to exercise more
  • 62% said that this encourages them to go out more often
  • 57% – They reported that it improved their physical condition
  • 75% of players say that Pokémon GO has helped them form friendships and social relationships.

John Hanke, CEO of Niantic, sums up this philosophy by saying:

“At Niantic, we believe we can use technology to step into the ‘reality’ of augmented reality — to encourage everyone, including ourselves, to stand up, walk outside, and connect with the people and world around us. It’s what we humans were created to do, the result of two million years of human evolution.” As a result, these are the things that make us happiest and technology should be used to enhance these basic human experiences, not to replace them.
