A Historically Long Heat Wave: Villages on the Greek Peninsula…

In the northwest of the Greek Peloponnese peninsula, four villages were evacuated on Saturday due to a forest fire. This was reported to the fire service.

95 firefighters, 33 cars, 4 planes and helicopters were deployed to fight this fire near the city of Patras. Residents of nearby villages such as Ziria, Kamaris, Ashaya and Walberi were ordered to leave their homes via warning messages on their mobile phones.

Hospitals in Patras and Ijeu are being asked to prepare for possible injuries from forest fires.

Several highways in the area have been closed. No traffic is allowed on the Rio Antrio bridge, which connects the Peloponnese to the Greek mainland.

Due to drought and heat, wildfires occur in Greece every summer. According to meteorologists, the country is also currently experiencing a “historic and prolonged heat wave”, with temperatures ranging between 42 and 44 degrees.
