British Health Secretary Matt Hancock held a press conference to explain the current situation in the UK. The numbers do not look good and therefore tougher measures are needed. But he also warned of a second, more contagious, variant of the Coronavirus that had been diagnosed.

“After all the efforts we made to control the virus, we now have a new, more contagious variant. I understand that most people understand what we need to do to get through this.” That is why it announced tighter measures for several regions starting December 26th.

In addition, the minister also warned about the second mutated alternative. Some South African travelers are said to have arrived in the UK and are said to be carriers of a different mutant variant from the one already in circulation in the UK. The travelers have been placed in quarantine and are under preliminary investigation. “It’s more contagious and mutated than the new version we already have here,” the minister said. “Anyone who has visited South Africa in the past two weeks or has been in close contact with anyone who has been in South Africa, we request that they be quarantined while further investigations are being conducted.”
