Activists of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot are on hunger strike | abroad

Two activists of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot have gone on a hunger strike in a Russian prison near Moscow. They are demanding, among other things, that they be housed in one cell and allowed to communicate with each other, reporting on independent news portal and civil rights website Ovd-Info.

The women are locked up for about two weeks. Members of the group critical of the regime were repeatedly arrested and sentenced to long prison terms. The band continues to create a buzz with their high profile actions. For example, during the final of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the squad members ran to the field.

One of the two women on hunger strike, Maria Alyoshina, gained international fame in 2012 when she and other members of the band were sentenced to two years in prison after they protested against Russian President Vladimir Putin with “punk prayers” in a church.
