US diplomats, intelligence officials, and other government officials in Vienna have repeatedly reported vague health complaints since the beginning of the year. Some of the affected Americans have been sent back to their countries for medical treatment.
On Friday, US authorities said the United States and Austria were investigating the reports. Some of the symptoms are similar to those of US diplomats and spies in Havana, Cuba in 2016 and 2017, who reported headaches, dizziness, and complaints consistent with a concussion.
Havana – Syndrome
Some said they heard a loud noise before symptoms suddenly appeared. In a few cases, it required months of medical treatment. No specific cause has been found for the complaints called ‘Havana syndrome’.
The United States eventually decided to bring back many of the employees from Cuba. Subsequently, US diplomats in countries such as China and Russia reported similar incidents. Ultimately, it remained unclear whether there were attacks and who was responsible.
Vienna: the epicenter of a mysterious disease
The capital of Austria is the largest epicenter of a mysterious disease after Havana. According to the US authorities, this concerns 20 new cases. These are now being examined by several medical teams, including from the Pentagon and the CIA.
International summits on the nuclear program with Iran were held in Vienna this year, but it is unclear whether this link has been taken into account.
Some believe that the unexplained complaints are the result of radioactive attacks, for example via radioactive weapons. Others argue that this is a form of mass hysteria, in which people hear about other people’s symptoms and feel ill as a result. Years of research, however, has been inconclusive.
