F1 will test HDR TV broadcasts this season

The sports channel BT Sport has already tried HDR broadcasting in Great Britain last year. Sky Sports, which has British rights in Formula 1, wants the infrastructure to be ready by summer to enable HDR broadcasting. In the US – the backyard of parent company Liberty Media – NASCAR, among others, is using the new technology.

The big breakthrough in HDR is expected during the Olympics this summer. Ian Holmes, Formula 1 Media Director, is excited about these developments. “One of the things we’re looking at specifically is HDR, high dynamic range. This can show fast-moving objects very well. We’ll be doing tests this year, which is likely the next step in expanding our offerings.” In addition, it is important that there is a demand for HDR. “We have to look carefully at who can take it. If we go live tomorrow, few people will be able to benefit from it. Sometimes you have great tech at home and the broadcasters are ready for it, but the people’s equipment at home isn’t ready yet.” “.

Mainly with this knowledge in mind, Formula 1 looks at the Summer Games in Tokyo with a tilted eye. “The Olympics is always a boost, because it’s once every four years. It often comes out with a lot of technology, so I’m very interested in what happens now in the Games [technologieland] Being Japan. I expect HDR to be something that we can be very passionate about. ”
