The number of attempts to reach the UK from the mainland has been increasing since the end of 2018. In 2020, there were more than 9,500 crossings, or attempts to do so. This was already four times more than it was in 2019. Last Wednesday, a record 482 migrants arrived on small boats on the British coast, a new daily record.
More than 10,000 migrants have already taken the dangerous illegal route across the Channel to the UK this year. This is according to data from the British news agency PA.
French and British Interior Ministers Gerald Darmanin and Priti Patel signed an agreement at the end of July to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the fight against illegal immigration. For example, France, with support from the United Kingdom, will allocate additional resources to combating illegal immigration, with additional patrols on the north coast between Boulogne and Dunkirk and towards the northwest around Dieppe.
Additional surveillance technology will also be introduced on the French side to prevent crossing attempts, including airborne surveillance. Finally, investments will be made in infrastructure to increase safety. France doubled last year the number of customers on the beaches with the support of London.
