Gas cooking in the kitchen and our health – Dagblad Suriname

When it comes to keeping everyone healthy, there are countless steps we can take to make sure we’re doing the best we can. Choosing a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep is important.

However, Anja, 45, of Paramaribo North points out that we often have no control over the cooking methods used. “Because cooking on gas can in some cases lead to a deterioration in health,” notes Anja. International studies point to potential health risks. Anja’s friend, Martha, who is also her neighbour, is also aware of the fact that gas stoves produce carbon monoxide, particulate matter and other harmful substances that can cause serious complaints.

“Yes, I’ve also read that cooking with gas can cause health problems,” says Anja. “In particular, long-term exposure to gas combustion products, including carbon monoxide, can make a person sick.”

Carbon monoxide is a toxic substance that can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea, and other symptoms. In addition, gas cooking can produce hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides and other harmful substances, which will lead to respiratory infections, pneumonia and other health problems.

An important tip is to ensure good ventilation for gas cookers. Good air circulation, by keeping a window or door open, can provide a great deal of relief. If you develop symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning such as headache, nausea, dizziness, or fatigue, it is best to seek fresh air immediately and seek medical attention.

But Anja’s neighbor points out another way to prevent health problems as much as possible. “I regularly clean and check the gas stove vents. Because that way you keep the air quality in the house from being poor.”
