Internet giant Google is now also entering the shopping streets: the brand’s first physical store has opened its doors in Chelsea, New York. The search engine giant wants consumers to primarily discover its range of electronic devices, from Pixel smartphones via Nest theme smartphones to Fitbit wearables, but also to view digital services.
It took four years to prepare the project. Before the physical store was built, a full mockup was first housed in the company’s “retail hangar”. Interactive screens continue to display various services, but Google Translate is the first to be shown: customers are invited to talk to the screens, which are instantly translated into 24 languages at once. Google also promises to give a sneak peek of what the translation system will look like on the back.
More products can be discovered in boxes with transparent LED screens as walls and in so-called “sandboxes”, where shoppers end up in real experience spaces. To prove the usefulness of the Nest “smart home” tool, the living room has been recreated and into another room fans can play on Google Stadia game consoles. There will also be regular events and workshops, from photography lessons at Pixel and YouTube concerts, to Silicon Valley giant promises.
