Karadzic is serving life in prison for genocide in Srebrenica, UK | abroad

Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic will spend the remainder of his life in prison in the United Kingdom. Karadzic was convicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia in The Hague. Initially he was sentenced to 40 years in prison, but in March 2019 This was life imprisonment on appeal. He is currently being held in the Scheveningen detention center.

“The UK has agreed that Radovan Karadzic, convicted of genocide in Srebrenica, should be transferred to a British prison to serve the remainder of his sentence,” British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab wrote on Twitter.

Radovan Karadzic is one of the few people to be found guilty of genocide. He was responsible for the massacre of men, women and children during the genocide in Srebrenica and helped prosecute the Siege of Sarajevo with his brutal attacks on civilians. We can be proud of the fact that Britain has supported his 30-year trial in order to seek justice for these heinous crimes. From British support to direct his arrest to the prison cell that now awaits him.

Karadzic was President of the RS. In the fighting in Bosnia, the population turned against each other and committed many brutal persecutions. Karadzic says he knows nothing about the purges carried out by his armed forces and militias. He claims that he did not order it.

The most shocking massacre was around Srebrenica, where a Dutch UN force was stationed. Proved unable to block drama. The general who was at the time in command of the Bosnian Serb Army and who was at the scene shortly before the massacre, Ratko Mladic, is also still on trial in court. The Court of Yugoslavia officially closed in 2017 and a panel is finalizing the final cases. This body is called the United Nations Criminal Court Mechanism.
