Landslide in a German city: many emergency calls but…

The regional government of Cologne has posted pictures on Twitter of the city of Blessem, which is part of the municipality of Erftstadt. In a field adjacent to the apartment complex, water caused a landslide. The pictures are amazing, and the rescues are very challenging.

Fatalities have been reported in the landslide. Several people were also reported missing, although emergency services were unable to provide the numbers. “Emergency calls come from homes, but at the moment rescue is not often possible,” the regional government in Cologne wrote on Twitter. “Our response to disasters was immediate.”

According to German media, emergency services are understaffed at the scene. Emergency services also discovered a gas leak that they could not deal with, further complicating the operation.

The storm has already killed at least 103 people in western Germany. 60 victims were counted in the Rhineland-Palatinate, 43 in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, and many are still missing.
