Tomorrow the elections in Germany. For the first time in 16 years, Merkel did not participate in that ballot. She is calling for the vote for Laschet, her conservative party’s candidate.
Germans are due to vote on Sunday to choose a new parliament. This includes the Federal Chancellor. On Saturday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel called for a vote for the “future” of Germany. She’s referring to Armin Laschet, the conservative candidate from her CDU party. It did so in Aachen, near the border with Belgium, during Laschet’s last meeting before Sunday’s election.
“It is about your future, the future of your children and the future of their parents. You only have a chance every four years to decide at the federal level who should shape that future for you in Berlin,” Merkel said alongside Laschet.
The election is expected to be an exciting duel between Social Democrat Olaf Schulz, who leads in the opinion polls, and his right-wing challenger Laschet.
