Nations League | Substitute Janssen scored the Dutch team’s shot against European champion England with a beautiful goal

Against England, national coach Andries Juncker brought Daphne van Domselaer back at his disposal, making her return under the crossbar. Moreover, the starting lineup was no different than it was during the losing match against Belgium. The Dutch XI started the important UEFA Nations League match convincingly.

But the first big opportunity came in only the 21st minute. Jill Roward shot it from long range, but Mary Earps saved it easily. Lieke Martens, Sherida Spitz and Viktoria Belova also had small chances and scored after more than half an hour of play.

Daniel van de Donk received the ball and passed it to Lieke Martens. The Paris Saint-Germain striker then scored a shot, but the goal should never have been awarded. Van den Donk was well offside, but due to there being no VAR at Galgenwaard, the goal was awarded.

England responds

After the opening goal, Sarina Vigman’s side became a bit sharper. Rachel Daly wasted a great chance five minutes before half-time after a brilliant pass from Alessia Russo. Shortly afterwards, Daphne van Domselaar had to make two saves after two open chances for the English.

In extra time of the first half, Lineth Beerenstein was very close to making it 2-0, but things went wrong in the second half. The English were getting stronger and after an hour of play it was the star Rousseau who slotted the equalizer past a desperate Van Domselaar.

Golden alternative

However, that was without substitute Renate Janssen. The FC Twente striker has not scored a goal for the Dutch national team in 6.5 years, but he chose the perfect moment to break that streak. Jansen received the ball through Martens and shot powerfully into the top corner.

Paris 2024

The Dutch national team thus obtains three decisive points in the Nations League, which should ultimately provide a ticket to the Olympic Games. A few days ago they suffered an unfortunate loss away to Belgium, but with the win over England, the Dutch team was once again fully involved in Group A.

The Belgians also played a draw with and against Scotland in the final stage. Everything is still open for the Dutch national team on the way to Paris 2024.

Group ranking 1

  • 1. Belgium – 4 points (+1)
  • 2. Netherlands – 3 points (+0)
  • 3. England – 3 points (+0)
  • 4. Scotland – 1 point (-1)
