MusicNetflix is developing a series based on the rock band U2. Director JJ Abrams is involved in the project as writer and executive producer Anthony McCarten has been recruited for the script, sources told The Hollywood Reporter.
McCarten, who has been nominated several times for an Academy Award, was previously responsible for the hit film bohemian rhapsody On the origin of the queen. He has also written for films such as The Two Popes, Darkest Hour, and The Theory of Everything.
U2 is one of the most successful bands in the world. The Irish group was formed in 1976 and consists of vocalist Bono, guitarist The Edge, guitarist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen Jr. Over the years, fourteen studio albums have been released and U2 has won 22 Grammys.
Netflix and Bad Robot Productions, Abrams’ production company, cannot confirm the news. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the untitled series is in early development.
