The booster vaccine against the omikron variant of the coronavirus loses its potency after three months. The chance of recovery increased from 15 to 45 percent compared to the period before a third dose was available. This is the result of a new study published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine.
“Pfizer/Biontech’s booster vaccines against Covid-19 significantly improve protection against omicron, but after three months, protection against hospitalization appears to have diminished,” said Sarah Y Tartoff, an American epidemiologist at the Kaiser Permanente Health Consortium. She is the lead author of the study. He stressed that there will be an increased resistance to the virus.
The study analyzed 11,123 non-hospital admissions and emergency room visits from December 2021 to February 2022. Both delta and omicron variants of the virus were in circulation at the time.
The study, which was funded by Pfizer, showed that three doses initially reduced hospital admissions by 85 percent. However, after three months, that percentage drops to 55 percent. A similar decrease in efficacy occurs in the delta variant.
