Red Lions land India and advance to hockey final

Alexander Hendricks after his hat-trick against India:

Loic Loebert gave the Belgians the lead after 70 seconds from a penalty kick, but the Indians showed themselves very dangerous on the counter. Harmanpreet Singh and Mandeep Singh reached 1-2 before the end of the first period. In the 19th minute, Alexander Hendrix put the score of the first half on the board on a penalty kick, which is good for his twelfth goal in the tournament.

After an exciting first half, the second half was less exciting. It took until the 49th minute to score the goal. Once again it was Hendrix who finished the penalty kick. Four minutes later, he scored his fourteenth goal with a penalty kick. John John Domain scored the final score in the last seconds.

Australia (FIH-1) and Germany (FIH-4) competed in another semi-final. Australia has emerged as the winner and will therefore face the Red Lions in the hockey final on Thursday.

Five years ago, the Belgians were also in the final in Rio de Janeiro, where they had to leave the gold medal 4-2 to Argentina. Since then, they have crowned themselves with the titles of World Champions (2018) and European Champions (2019).

Belgium is now certain of four medals at the Games. Gymnastics Nina Derwill (gold), cyclist Wut van Aert (silver) and judoka Matthias Kass (bronze) took over the top three.
