Robin and his girlfriend were in Morocco during the earthquake: “The stairs move like rubber”

Robin and his girlfriend were at a riad on Friday evening, a type of bed and breakfast in the historic center of Marrakesh. They had just gone to sleep when the ground started shaking.

“Like a piece of rubber”

“All of a sudden the bed started shaking and sliding,” Robin testifies. “Then we also saw the wall moving back and forth and we quickly realized it was an earthquake. When I got out of the room I tried to grab the stairs – everything was moving and I looked for support: the stairs were moving in one piece.” (Read more below the picture)

The couple fled through a narrow alley to Marrakesh’s large central square, where they spent the night. “The people who came out were often covered in dust and had white faces, abrasions and a bloody face,” Robin testifies.

panic

“There was a lot of panic. There’s not much you can do at that moment. It’s the little things: cleaning the wounds with tissues. I was affected by what happened and I didn’t sleep all night because of the adrenaline.”

The earthquake, which measured 6.8 on the Richter scale, is the strongest to hit Morocco in 120 years. It is difficult to obtain aid, especially in the remote Atlas Mountains in the middle of the desert. Entire villages were destroyed, and rescuers are still searching for survivors.
