At least six people have died trying to cross the Channel into the UK. The boat capsized this morning. French authorities reported that about fifty people were rescued, but more people were still missing.

According to French authorities, the victims are from Afghanistan. Six of them are said to be around 30 years old. It is also believed that among the rescued migrants, who were taken to the French and English coasts, were children. They come mainly from Afghanistan, but there are also some Sudanese.

Rescue operation

A large-scale rescue operation was launched from France and the UK at around 6am this morning. Countries have received reports that dozens of boats are trying to cross at the same time.

Four French ships, a helicopter and two British ships were deployed in the rescue operation. It happened near Sangeten, in northern France. The search for other possible victims continues.

Small boats

Since 2018, more than 100,000 migrants have crossed the canal illegally in small boats. The road is dangerous: at least five migrants died crossing last year.

In November 2021, 27 migrants died when their boat sank. Last Thursday, 755 migrants were discovered on their way to England on fourteen boats. This was the largest number in a single day this year.
