Representatives of the United States, Iran and other countries reached a compromise in Vienna on Monday to lift US sanctions and scale back Tehran’s nuclear program. Those were the original goals of the 2015 agreement designed to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons. The United States unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in 2018 under then-President Donald Trump.

“Everything that can be negotiated is included in the final version of the text. It is now up to the signatories to make political decisions,” Borrell spokesman Peter Stano said. “Yes or no.” “There is no room for further concessions. As coordinator of the negotiations, Josep Borrell expects bold political decisions. No deadline has been set, but we expect all participants to make that decision very quickly.”

If an agreement is reached, Stano said, Josep Borrell will convene a meeting of the foreign ministers of the signatories. Josep Borrell warned in a tweet on Monday evening, confirming the end of the talks that had been underway since April 2021. Vienna was organized: “Negotiations are over, this is the final text (…) and will not be renegotiated.”

The current partners in the agreement are Iran itself, Russia, China and France. United Kingdom and Germany. The United States participated indirectly in the Vienna consultations.
