The short film “I Am Not a Robot,” starring Ellen Barren and Henry Van Loon, is available in cinemas worldwide from September 26. The dark sci-fi comedy has been selected for the 27th Manhattan Short Film Festival. This prestigious festival screens the year’s top ten short films for a week in 500 cinemas around the world, to an audience of over 100,000 visitors.

Production company OAK Motion Pictures announced Sunday. In I Am Not a Robot , feminist activist Lara (Paren) wonders if she’s a robot because she fails a captcha test. Only humans can complete the test. The film is also set to screen in Los Angeles during the festival, perhaps to catch the attention of members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the organization behind the annual Oscars.

Director and screenwriter Victoria Farmerdam graduated from the Utrecht University of the Arts (HKU) in 2015. She previously produced the short films Korte Kuitspier (2019) and Snorrie (2020), both with Henry van Loon.

Manhattan Shorts wasn’t the first success for Because I’m Not a Robot. In October 2023, the film immediately won Best Short Film at its world premiere at the Sitges International Film Festival in Spain – the world’s largest fantasy festival.
