With layers like the Countryman, the current Mini range bears little relation to the original concept from 1959. That’s changing now, and this Rocketman concept once again has true Mini genes.
If all goes well, Mini will be back where it once started: in the small segment. The Rocketman is still a concept car, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it goes into production before long. It is 3.42 meters long and although it is shorter than the Fiat 500, the Rocketman extends beyond its ancestor by 37 centimeters. Details such as the visible hinges of the doors and the downward-opening hatch for the luggage compartment are clear references to the original. Of course the Rocketman has plenty of modern and trendy details, for example look at the massively designed rear light units or the hinged hatch on the roof.
The interior of the concept has a 3+1 configuration, the same arrangement we see in the Toyota iQ, for example. A minor adjustment is that a passenger can sit behind the co-driver, while the seat behind the driver is only for emergencies. The interior is decked out in leather and fine-touch plastics to underline the premium nature of the brand. The luggage compartment is equipped with a pull-out drawer, which can be slid 35 centimeters out of the car if necessary, and this drawer in the luggage compartment can be placed at different heights, creating a kind of multifunctional loading platform.
It’s unclear at this point if and when we’ll see Rocketman on the road. With concept cars such as the Speedster and the coupe now reaching production, and talk of a Beachcomber concept in development, the Rocketman’s prospects look good. An SUV from Mini seemed unlikely, and we finally got one. On top of that Let’s see the Geneva Motor Show concept car in real life.
