Windows Server 2022 out – News

Microsoft released Windows Server 2022 to the general public. The system will be supported for ten years and will include the ability to patch virtual machines without rebooting.

Server 2022 is the successor to Windows Server 2019. The operating system visually looks like Windows 10 and comes in three editions: Standard, Datacenter, and Datacenter: Azure Edition. The release is tied to five years of regular support and an additional five years of extended support.

The operating system has a number of technical innovations, but it also replaces Internet Explorer with Edge based on Chromium. There is now also support for DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) where DNS queries are encrypted over HTTPS. Just as there is now support for AES-256-GCM and AES-256-CCM encryption.

Windows containers are now 40 percent smaller, making them 30 percent faster to boot and perform, according to Microsoft. For AMD processors, there is now Nested Virtualization that allows you to run Hyper-V inside a Hyper-V virtual machine.

Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition now also gets ‘Hotpatch’, which is the ability to perform updates to a virtual Windows 2022 server without having to reboot afterwards.
