$17 million in arrears with Caricom Foundations

Regarding Suriname’s Caricom membership, Suriname has a huge backlog of over US$17 million with all the institutes it is a part of. “We will not be able to pay everything, but the government plans to compensate contributions substantially until next July,” Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation (BIBIS) Albert Ramdin said yesterday at a government conference.

In the second half of this year, from July 1 to December 31, President Chan Santoki will take over the CARICOM presidency. For this reason, the minister talks about an important challenge in assuming the presidency.

Presidential preparations
The government is busy preparing for the presidency of the Caricom. Minister Ramdin indicated during the press conference that there are committees that will study the organizational, logistical, security and protocol aspects.

At the beginning of July, Suriname will also host the Conference of Heads of State and Government of the Caribbean Community. The Minister noted that the State has already started activities related to the presidency of President Santoki and the Conference, both substantively and organizationally.

He went on to say that Suriname already had good experience in these matters during the visits of President Jair Bolsonaro, President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, and Irfan Ali, President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana. The Government will also cooperate with the business community and other relevant authorities when organizing activities in Suriname.

In addition to CARICOM’s 15 heads of government, the July Conference of Heads of State will also include observers from four countries belonging to the United States and the United Kingdom within the Caribbean. In addition, special guests from South America will participate at the highest political level and a number of representatives of international organizations.
