Afghan UN staff were prevented from working in the eastern province of Nangarhar. The United Nations reported that on Tuesday. The international organization refers to the Taliban regime in Afghanistan that it cannot function without women.
“The United Nations in Afghanistan expresses deep concern” about the Afghan female staff, who have been “prevented from volunteering to work in Nangarhar Province,” tweeted Onama, the UN Mission in Afghanistan.
“We remind the de facto authorities that United Nations entities cannot operate and provide vital assistance without female staff,” the mission added. In response to a question by Agence France-Presse, the government spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said he would inform himself of what happened.
Taliban
And the Islamic Taliban movement has led Afghanistan again since the summer of 2021. It was announced at the end of last year that 1,260 NGOs in the country were no longer allowed to work with Afghan women. Several NGOs suspended their activities, but resumed their work in January after making exceptions for certain sectors, such as health care and food distribution.
The United Nations was not involved in this decision, but in a speech to the Security Council marking International Women’s Day on March 8, Onama President Rosa Otunbayeva expressed fears that the United Nations would also be banned from working with Afghan women in the future. ..
